How to Compress GIFs for Discord
Discord's 8MB file upload limit is the most common reason people need to compress GIFs. Animated GIFs are notoriously large because every frame stores a full image, and a few seconds of animation can easily exceed 10MB. This tool is pre-configured with optimal settings for Discord: lossy compression at 80, colors reduced to 128, targeting under 8MB output.
The compression works by merging nearly identical pixels between animation frames. At a lossy setting of 80, the visual difference is imperceptible for most GIFs. The color reduction from 256 to 128 shaves additional bytes without noticeable quality loss in typical screen-recorded or meme-style GIFs.
When Compression Alone Is Not Enough
If your GIF is 30MB or larger, compression alone may not bring it under 8MB. In that case, add a resize step to reduce the dimensions. A GIF that is 1920 pixels wide does not need to be that large for Discord chat. Resizing to 480-640px wide typically looks sharp on Discord while dramatically reducing file size.
For Discord Nitro users, the limit is much higher (50MB or 500MB). If you have Nitro, check out our Discord Nitro GIF compressor which uses gentler settings to preserve maximum quality within the Nitro limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Discord file upload limit?
Discord free accounts can upload files up to 8MB. Discord Nitro Basic raises this to 50MB, and Nitro to 500MB. Most users are on the free tier, so 8MB is the practical limit for sharing GIFs in Discord servers.
How much can this tool compress my GIF?
Typical compression is 40-70% reduction. A 15MB GIF can usually be compressed to under 8MB. Very large or complex GIFs (30MB+) may need additional resizing to hit the target. The tool will warn you if compression alone is not enough.
Will the GIF still look good after compression?
Yes. The default lossy setting of 80 provides an excellent balance between file size and visual quality. Most people cannot tell the difference from the original. If you notice artifacts, lower the lossy value toward 60 for a gentler compression.
Can I also resize the GIF to make it smaller?
Yes. After compressing, click "Resize GIF" to add a resize step. Reducing dimensions is the most effective way to shrink GIFs further. Halving both width and height typically cuts file size by 60-75%.
Does this upload my GIF to a server?
No. All processing happens in your browser. Your GIF never leaves your device. This means compression is instant and completely private.
